The M4 carbine is a family of firearms tracing its lineage back to earlier carbine versions of the M16, all based primarily on the first AR-15 manufactured by ArmaLite.
It's a shorter and lighter version of the M16A2 attack rifle, achieving eighty percent parts commonality with the M16A2. The M4 has selective fire options including semi-automatic and three-round burst ( like the M16A2 ), while the M4A1 has a "full auto" option in the place of the three-round burst. The M4 and variants fire 5.56x45mm NATO ammo and are gas-operated, air-cooled, magazine-fed, selective fire firearms with a 4-position telescoping stock. Original M4 models had a flat-ended telescoping stock, but newer models are now supplied with a reworked telescoping stock that is a touch larger with curve at the end. The M4 is like much earlier compact M16 versions,eg the 1960s-era XM177 family. Some of those visible designs are clear in both weapons, however the majority of the likenesses are not really obvious.
As with many carbines, the M4 is handy and faster to hold than a full length rifle. The price is slightly inferior ballistic performance compared to the full-size M16, with its virtually 6" ( fifteen cm ) longer barrel. This becomes most clear at ranges of three hundred yards and beyond.
Statistically most small-arms engagements happen inside one hundred yards. This suggests that the M4 is pretty much a satisfactory weapon for the bulk of troops. The questionable sacrifice in terminal ballistics and range, in return for significantly improved handling traits, is mostly thought to be a worthwhile compromise. While the M4's maneuverability makes it an applicant for non-infantry troops ( automobile crews, clerks and staff officials ), it also makes it superb for close quarters combat ( CQC ), and airborne and special operations, which is the most well-liked use for the weapon. It's been adopted by US Special Operations Command ( USSOCOM ) and is the preferred weapon of the U.S. Military Special Forces and Navy SEALs. M4's have also been fielded by the Australian Special Air Service Regiment. Malaysia acquired M4 Carbine service rifles to replace the Steyr August service rifles in its armed forces in 2006 and may be made in Malaysia with permission by SME Ordnance Sdn Bhd.
It is anticipated the M4 will be adopted by law enforcement agencies in Malaysia,eg the Royal Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. The M4 was developed and produced for the U. S. Regime by Colt Firearms, that has an exclusive contract to supply the M4 family of weapons thru 2009 ; however, a number of other makers offer M4-like firearms. The M4A1, together with the M16A4, has often replaced the M16A2 ; the U.S. Air Force, for instance, plans to transition utterly to the M4 Carbine. The M4 Carbine is also the standard rifle for U.S. Air Force Security Forces members whether at home station or employed abroad. They maintain an annual qualification on it. The US Sea Corps has ordered its officials ( up to the rank of lieutenant colonel ) and Staff Non-commissioned officials to hold the M4A1 carbine rather than the M9 handgun.
This is as per the Sea Corps motto, "Every Sea a rifleman." US Navy corpsmen also will be issued M4A1s rather than the M9.
